No need to uncomfortably tuck your trousers into your boots simply use a pair of trouser twists.

These elasticated twists have metal fasteners at each end and are ideal for holding trouser ankles in place out of the mud, or can simply be used to shorten the trouser, again protecting them from mud and dirt.
