A Pace ot Tally counter is an excellent addition to aid in navigation. This is especially useful when walking in bad weather or in thick forest. I've used one for years.

Simply work out how many paces you take for every 100m on various types of terrain, make a note of the numbers and you will always have a reference.

When visibility is extremely low (thick forest, bad weather or darkness) use a tally counter to keep a record of your paces and you will always know how far you have travelled (you'll never be able to keep the count in your head). You will also be able to calculate your speed across the ground.
