Bison Spalt Axe - A Great Splitting Tool

BISON 1879 originates from the family tradition of master-smith Moritz Trept, a tradition that later became BISON, the company. Today BISON is synonymous with high-quality tools and craftsmanship, and when using them this heritage becomes abundantly clear. 

A Spalt Axe has to be my favourite splitting tool as it has a high splitting efficiency with very low effort due to crowned head shape. Splitting Mauls can be a little tiring as they are heavier and require more effort which is why I would favour a Spalt Axe. This axe will splits all sizes of wood whether it be hardwood or soft. The solid steel sleeve handle protection gives additional safety and durability for when you inevitably miss! The most common cause of handle breakage is from overstriking and damaging the handle near the head. 

The oiled Hickory handle is 700mm long so a really good length for getting a proper swing with a metal protector. Hickory is the ideal material for axes as part of it's natural abilities is that it absorbs shock extremely well. Other woods will do this but hickory is definitely the best. It is attached the the head first, with a wedge and then a conical metal wedge.

To keep your axe and it safe it comes with a excellent quality leather mask that is riveted together so it is super strong.
