The Boar Bushcraft Knife - DC4 & Firesteel Edition is a great knife for the field and ticks all the boxes as you will always have a good knife, the ability to sharpen it and a Ferrocium Rod Firesteel for firelighting.
High Grade Bohler K720 High Carbon Tool steel is one of the toughest steels out there and is used widely to make high precision tools that need to stand up to some serious punishment.
High Grade Bohler N695 Stainless steel which has a high hardness and great wear resistance and is one of Bohlers premium stainless steels. We have decided to make a variant of our knives in this steel as, after quite some testing, we have found that it performs extremely well.
It has a higher Carbon content that many other stainless steels which means it holds an edge longer and can be tempered to the same degree as Carbon Steels. This particular steel actually has a higher content than many High Carbon Tool Steels. This makes it perform with pretty much all the benefits of Carbon Steel with the added bonus of great corrosion resistance.
The blade has a full "Scandi" grind to it that is wickedly sharp straight out of the box. There are big benefits to having a proper Scandi grind to a knife and these are mainly to do with edge maintenance. A Scandi grind essentially means that the whole bevel of the knife is the edge (there is no secondary bevel) so when it comes to sharpening life is made very simple. When sharpening you can simply place the entire knife on the stone, roll it up onto the bevel and you will always achieve the correct angle for sharpening; MUCH easier than a knife with a secondary bevel!
It is handled in Super Grade Curly Birch which is a great wood for the task as it not only looks great it is VERY easy to maintain. The handles are also wonderfully ergonomic and fit the hand perfectly for hours of hard work. The handle is very slightly longer (1cm) than most knives of this type on the market and this allows more flexibility for positioning for different uses or simply a better fit for users with larger hands.
The sheath is a high quality leather product that allow you to carry the knife in the regular way or offers the versatility of being able to be carried a linear fashion along a belt or to be attached to the strap of a bag or even on MOLLE type webbing if need be. The leather addition to the front allows you to carry a firesteel and a DC4 stone (both included) and is also removable to allow you to carry it separately on your belt.
Our knife range is manufactured from high quality European materials by a top, well known, European manufacturer in small batches; they are NOT churned out in their thousands in a factory in the Far East. This allows us to have ultimate control over quality and materials and we are extremely happy with the results.
The Sharpening Stone
The newly-developed DC4 whetstone consists of a fine diamond stone (25 micron) and a very special ceramic stone, made of synthetic sapphires. The advantage of these materials, although they get worn, will still keep their flat shape this is important when you sharpen your knife. And, since these materials are the hardest we know of, they will sharpen any steel, even these extremely hard powder steels.
The firesteel in this model is our own TBS ferrocium rod Army sized Firesteel (9.4mm thick) that gives a shower of sparks at over 3000c (5400f). It makes firelighting SO much easier and will give you thousands of strikes. It also comes with its own, very useful striker which has a useful roamer measuring scale and a bottle opener. The striker with this steel gives a MUCH better shower of white hot sparks than the back of your knife.

Ordered the knife with next day delivery and arrived 11.30 the next day. First impressions, the knife was well packed, oiled and extremely sharp out of the box, the scales felt nice and smooth with a lovely grain in the curly birch which still felt comfortable and grippy, I have medium sized hands and the handle suits me just fine. I like the fact the sheath comes with a pouch for the DC4 stone and matching ferrocerium rod finished in curly birch, this is a nice feature, its great that the sheath can be worn horizontal as well as vertical as I go Kayaking and don't want the knife digging in while paddling. Overall the workmanship on the knife and sheath is good and I'm very pleased with my purchase.

so after doing some research and searching the internet I opted for the TBS Boar in curly birch in N695 stainless steel for the 5mm thickness and the multi purpose leather sheath, later changing to the Nordic dangler sheath as it suited my needs. having had this knife for over a year know and using it for all my bushcraft needs its preformed outstanding with all the abuse that its been put through. from battening wood to carving tent pegs and staying razor sharp and only needing stropping to maintain the super sharp edge. I would highly recommend TBS knife range to anyone starting out in bushcraft. with good price range it is a must for any bushcrafter or backwoodsman.
