TBS Lynx Compact Knife - Green Canvas Micarta
I have been wanting to do this for a while now and I am really happy with the results. This is such a universal type of knife I am struggling to find a use that it doesn't lend itself to.
I am calling it the “Compact Lynx” as it is a small version of the current Lynx. I know that may be a little confusing to TBS fans as it is, essentially, the same size and shape as the original MKI Lynx before we made it into a full size Bushcraft Knife.
It has been designed to be as maintenance free as possible so, in essence, as long as you sharpen it occasionally it will just last for ever. It is going to be made from Sandvik's 14C28N which will come out at about 2.8mm at the spine.
14C28N is known for its excellent edge retention, hardness, and corrosion resistance which is also relatively easy to sharpen and maintain. It is a great steel to use for everyday use knives and is made to very exacting standards.
It will come with a flat grind with a fine secondary bevel making it a proper all rounder. I have used this knife for all sorts of daily tasks including processing wood, cutting cord, processing game and, ultimately, then brought it home and used it as a kitchen knife. It is just a great cutter. The blade also features a dedicated area for striking a TBS Firesteel, which is included in the package, and the superb Kydex sheath which carries it all.
The handles will all be micarta or G10. Why? Well to me it is such a durable and water resistant material it lends itself to this project extremely well. We have prototype this knife with Olive Green G10, Green Canvas Micarta, Black Canvas Micarta and the slightly finer Black Cotton Micarta. The handle also features a lanyard hole which I am always a fan of.
I decided that the sheath should be Kydex as it just lends itself to this type of project of being as maintenance free as possible. The sheath features a firesteel holder that will hold an Army sized TBS Firesteel and also two strips of “Biothane” which is a webbing with a TPU coating to almost imitate leather and is super durable. The purposes of these straps is so that you can attached to belt in a scout carry fashion. It will come as standard with a Kydex sheath but there will also be a couple of leather options available for separate purchase.
I think the most common and handy way of carry will be to attach a lanyard and carry it around your neck. Of course another option which I like is attach a belt clip and carry it in a pocket of your trousers as an EDC style fixed blade.
All in all I love this knife and I am sure it will be a popular option for many.
