I love the new Timberwolf as it is simply a brilliant all rounder but after listening to some feedback from customers they wanted that design with a high end, high carbon tool steel with leather and wood. Well, you asked and we delivered.

After a lot of experimentation and looking at different steels we just keep coming back to Böhler-Uddeholm's AISI O2 High Carbon tool steel and selected a 3.2mm stock for this project. We did look at 80Crv2 and 15N20 but they are really more suited for much larger knives, band saw blades and other similar tools. They work well but they just don't have the edge stability, edge retention and wear resistance of K720 meaning it is simply better for woodworking tools and smaller cutting tools such as the Timberwolf Bushcraft Knife. It simply offers better edge holding for finer slicing, cutting and woodworking tasks.

We also considered the classic - O1, but on reflection, we decided to go with O2 as it just offers superior wear resistance compared to O1 steel due to its alloying, while still retaining good machinability. In short this means it has the ability to resist abrasion, erosion, and microscopic wear during hard use use which directly contributes to long-term edge retention. It means the edge remains sharper for  longer despite friction from cutting, slicing, and contact with hard materials.

When we looked at other knives out there I am happy to admit that one of the best Bushcraft Knives available is the Mora Garberg. It is a great knife and great performer so when making of the Timberwolf Bushcraft Knife the Garberg's blade geometry was a great starting point. We basically followed the same steel thickness and edge geometry which makes it a great cutting tool and perfect for all your bushcrafting tasks.

It features a true Scandi grind with edge geometry of 28which makes a superb cutting tool and being a high end tool steel it offer's better edge holding for finer, slicing, or woodworking tasks. The blade is an ideal size at 100mm (4") and is easy to sharpen and maintain.

We always recommend that you use a sharpening stone to keep your tool razor sharp rather than a set system as a Scandi grind is very difficult to get the right angle on a set system. The set systems are brilliant for knives with a secondary bevel like the sabre ground Timberwolf knives or the Lynx Compact.

The handles are wonderfully ergonomic and sculpted and feature either Turkish Walnut or Curly Birch handle scales with red liners. Wooden handles will always need maintenance over the life of the knife and we always advise using a good quality oil such as boiled Linseed Oil or Tung Oil periodically to keep the wood nourished.

You could, if you prefer, fill a jam jar up with oil and put the knife handle in the oil bath for 24 hours. This will allow for deeper penetration of the oil making it even more water resistant. Products like Teak Oil or Danish oil are not a good alternative to regular oils as, although they contain oil, they also contain resins which cause a harder protective layer. This sounds good in theory but it doesn't allow the wood to breath and any breach in that layer can cause water to get in underneath which cannot get out.

The blade is a Carbon steel so will be more susceptible to corrosion simply because of its nature so you will need to clean and oil it after use and there are some great products out there to do this. Please bear in mind that not all products are food safe so if you are using your knife for food prep in the field you should use a food safe product.
